A motorcyclist is dead following a deputy-involved shooting after a high-speed pursuit Saturday morning in Sampson County.
The Sampson County Sheriff’s Office (SCSO) reports that the chase began around 9:30 a.m. on US 421 near Clinton when deputies attempted to stop the motorcyclist for a registration violation. During the pursuit, deputies observed the rider carrying a firearm.
The chase continued onto secondary roads before returning to US 421. The motorcyclist ultimately lost control and crashed near Kitty Fork.
According to authorities, after the crash, the suspect drew his weapon, prompting a deputy to fire their service weapon, striking the individual.

SCSO stated that the investigation is still ongoing and “very fluid.” As is standard procedure, the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation is now handling the case.
