A Fayetteville man has been charged with first-degree murder in connection to the death of an infant, according to the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies arrested 21-year-old Darrell Lamar Evans Jr., charging him with felony child abuse and murder.
On May 8, authorities responded to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center following reports of a baby suffering from a traumatic brain injury. The infant died the following day.
An autopsy conducted by the North Carolina Chief Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed the child’s death was a homicide.
Investigators said the infant had been in Evans’ care at the time of the incident.
Evans is currently being held without bond at the Cumberland County Detention Center. His first court appearance is scheduled for Wednesday.
