Three family members, including a 5-year-old child, died, and a toddler was in critical condition following a weekend train versus pedestrian collision in northern Ohio.
According to Fremont Mayor Danny Sanchez, the incident took place at about 7:30 p.m. ET on May 18, when a Norfolk Southern train collided with two women and two children as they crossed a bridge.
Fremont is located in Sandusky County, along Lake Erie’s shores.
On May 19, city officials named the fatality victims as O Ny Zar, 34; Ram Masan, 50; and 5-year-old Intisar Mi, all relatives from Fort Wayne, Indiana. According to local officials, a 14-month-old infant survived the tragedy but was hospitalized.
Sanchez earlier told reporters that workers had first searched the Sandusky River for the 5-year-old who went missing after the incident.
The 5-year-old child’s body was discovered by search personnel on the afternoon of May 19, according to Fremont Safety Service Director Kenneth P Frost.
Infant pulled from Sandusky River in critical condition
According to Sandusky County Sheriff Chris Hilton, the two ladies died at the scene, and the newborn recovered from the river was hospitalized in critical condition.
The Fremont News Messenger, part of the USA TODAY Network, reported that a witness rescued the infant from the water. The individual who saved the infant gave CPR, according to Hilton, and first responders took the baby to a Toledo hospital.
Who was killed by a train in Ohio?
According to the outlet, Sanchez stated that the family was in the city on a fishing trip and had been wandering on the bridge that is only used by trains.
