Pennsylvania has announced a significant extension to its Property and Rent Tax Rebate Program, offering critical financial support to eligible residents facing housing expenses. This extension reflects the state’s continued commitment to helping older adults and people with disabilities remain financially secure and independent.
Who Is Eligible for the Rebate?
The program is specifically designed to aid some of Pennsylvania’s most vulnerable populations. Those who may qualify include:
- Homeowners and renters aged 65 and older
- Widows or widowers aged 50 and older
- Individuals with disabilities aged 18 and older
To qualify, applicants must also meet specific income limits. The rebate, which can reach up to $1,000, is intended to alleviate the burden of housing costs, whether through property taxes or rent.
Application Deadline Extended to December 2025
Governor Josh Shapiro’s administration recently announced that the application deadline for the 2025 rebate cycle has been extended to December 31, 2025. This allows more time for residents to access the program and receive the financial help they need.
According to state officials, applications can still be submitted through June 30 by mail, online, or in person, providing flexibility for residents with varying levels of access to digital or transportation resources.
Backed by the State Lottery and Gambling Revenues
The program is funded through Pennsylvania’s lottery and gambling revenues, which are specifically designated for supporting seniors and individuals with disabilities. The Department of Revenue emphasizes the program’s importance, especially during times of economic uncertainty for many older adults.
Officials Promote Awareness and Encourage Participation
At a recent event held at the West Shore Senior Center in Cumberland County, state leaders gathered to promote the deadline extension and raise awareness about the rebate program. Jason Kavulich, Pennsylvania’s Secretary of Aging, praised the program’s expansion and its impact.
“Affordable housing continues to be a central concern for our older adults. This program allows more people to remain in their homes and remain active members of their communities,” said Kavulich.
Program Expansion Brings Record Participation
The impact of the program has grown significantly over the past year. In 2024, more than 522,000 rebates were distributed, totaling $319.2 million. This marked a sharp increase from 2022, when around 405,000 rebates were issued, totaling $192 million. The boost is largely attributed to the expansion efforts led by Governor Shapiro and supported by both political parties.
So far in 2025, nearly 400,000 applications have already been received—a record-breaking pace compared to previous years. Authorities estimate that 41,000 additional individuals may still apply before the year ends.
A Lifeline for Older Adults and People with Disabilities
The rebate program has become a vital resource for many Pennsylvanians, especially those on fixed incomes. By covering a portion of housing expenses, the initiative helps ensure that residents can remain in their homes, maintain stability, and continue participating in their communities.
As the December deadline approaches, state leaders continue to urge eligible individuals to apply and take full advantage of this expanded support.
