A serious wrong-way crash on I-40 near the Hammond Road and South Saunders Street exit sent three people to the hospital Monday night, according to the Raleigh Police Department.
The crash occurred around 8:23 p.m. when a driver traveling the wrong direction on the interstate collided head-on with another vehicle. Authorities are still working to determine how the driver entered the highway going the wrong way.
Emergency crews responded quickly, and three individuals were transported to the hospital. Their conditions have not yet been released.
Police closed the interstate in that area at 8:54 p.m., later reopening one westbound lane as the investigation continued.
The Raleigh Police Department is urging drivers to avoid the area and use alternate routes while the scene is cleared and the investigation remains active.
