Customers intervened to stop a domestic assault occurring in the bathroom of a Jefferson City Hy-Vee store on Saturday, according to court documents.
Jeremie M. McClain, 33, of Jefferson City, allegedly followed a woman into the bathroom and attacked her after she attempted to end their relationship. The probable cause statement details that McClain verbally abused the woman before choking her.
The victim was able to escape when customers intervened, the statement adds. A juvenile was also in a nearby bathroom stall during the assault.
McClain denied choking the victim, claiming the incident was merely an argument. However, police noted visible marks on the victim’s neck.
On Saturday, prosecutors charged McClain with first-degree domestic assault. He remains in the Cole County Jail with no bond as of Monday.
