The U.S. has deported 131 undocumented migrants from Central Asia to Uzbekistan, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced on Wednesday press release.
According to a press release, the Uzbek government collaborated with the U.S. to facilitate the removal of immigrants from Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, and Kyrgyzstan. DHS noted that the Uzbek government fully funded the deportation of its nationals.
“We commend Uzbekistan President Shavkat Mirziyoyev for his leadership in sending a flight to return 131 illegal aliens back to their home country,” said Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem. “We look forward to continuing to work together with Uzbekistan on efforts to enhance our mutual security and uphold the rule of law.”
The deportations reflect President Trump’s renewed focus on strict immigration enforcement in the early months of his second term. In addition to this action, the administration has deported hundreds of migrants to a large prison facility in El Salvador.
Meanwhile, House Judiciary Committee Republicans advanced legislation supporting several of Trump’s immigration priorities, such as raising application fees for asylum seekers and boosting funding to detain and deport migrants.
A recent CNN poll, showed that 52% of Americans believe Trump has “gone too far” with deportations—a 7-point increase since February.
