A tornado watch has been extended until 8 p.m. CDT this evening for 11 counties in southeast Texas, including the Houston metro region, as severe weather remains a threat. According to the National Weather Service (NWS), Harris, Fort Bend, Montgomery, and other counties are at risk of tornadoes and severe thunderstorms.
The revised tornado watch, which was initially scheduled to expire at 6 p.m., now includes Houston, Sugar Land, and The Woodlands, as well as communities further out like Huntsville and Weimar. This extension applies to a region that is already experiencing stormy conditions, with severe gusts and the chance of rotating storms increasing throughout the evening.
Authorities are encouraging folks to remain vigilant and closely watch local weather reports. The probability of tornadoes increases as storms build. The NWS advises residents in the watch regions to prepare an emergency plan and seek shelter quickly if a tornado warning is issued. Additionally, vehicles in affected areas should avoid travel wherever possible, especially in flood-prone locations.
The tornado watch is forecast to stay in effect until 8 p.m. tonight, but additional updates and warnings may be issued as circumstances change.
