DURHAM, N.C. – The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation’s Financial Crimes Unit is currently investigating the Durham Committee on the Affairs of Black People, WRAL Investigates has confirmed.
According to the SBI, the investigation was launched at the request of Durham District Attorney Satana Deberry. While the DA’s office has not responded to requests for comment, the nature of the probe indicates potential financial improprieties within the longstanding civil rights organization.
Floyd McKissick Jr., who assumed the role of chair of the committee in January, confirmed the group itself initiated the investigation following concerns raised in a CPA-prepared report.
“We are optimistic that any person or persons that engaged in criminal wrongdoing will be held accountable, but we cannot discuss it any further because of an ongoing investigation,” McKissick said in a statement.
Founded nearly 90 years ago, the Durham Committee on the Affairs of Black People has been a key force in the city’s civil rights and civic engagement landscape. Its mission focuses on eliminating racial discrimination, promoting the welfare of Black residents, and collaborating with other groups to strengthen the Black community.
Further details of the case, including potential suspects or the nature of the alleged financial misconduct, have not been made public due to the ongoing investigation.
