More than 9,000 residents were left in the dark from Monday night into early Tuesday morning.
Most of the outages were concentrated near the Hidden Hollow neighborhood in east Durham.
The exact cause remains unknown.
This incident follows another outage last Friday: a driver struck a utility pole in downtown Durham, cutting power to thousands.
Duke Energy estimated service would be restored by 4 a.m.
