Five people, including the injured victim, are facing charges after a chaotic brawl among housemates in Mariners Harbor that left one man with a collapsed lung, according to NYPD officials.
Jose Sanchez, 43, who suffered the most serious injuries, is also facing charges after allegedly brandishing a dumbbell during the fight, sources told Advance/SILive.com.
According to a criminal complaint, Sanchez and four other defendants—Edwin Ramirez, 24; Guadalupe Ramirez, 42; Irvin Ramirez, 22; and Patricia Vasquez, 37—were all involved in the May 12 altercation inside their shared home on Van Pelt Avenue, near Netherland and Forest avenues.
Sanchez was both a participant and a victim, according to a law enforcement source.
The complaint claims Edwin, Guadalupe, and Irvin Ramirez, along with Vasquez, repeatedly punched and kicked Sanchez during the fight.
Sanchez sustained several injuries, including a collapsed lung, head lacerations, a bruised eye, and severe pain, according to police. He was taken to Richmond University Medical Center in stable condition.
The incident reportedly started around 4 a.m., when Sanchez returned home and got into a heated argument with a sixth housemate, who was not arrested. During the confrontation, Sanchez allegedly raised a dumbbell toward Irvin Ramirez and said, “I will hit you with this.”
He then allegedly punched Vasquez in the face.
In response, Edwin and Irvin Ramirez allegedly hit Sanchez in the face. The complaint states the Ramirez brothers and Vasquez dragged him outside and continued to punch and kick him, from the side entrance to the front yard.
Edwin, Guadalupe, and Irvin Ramirez, along with Vasquez, are charged with gang assault, assault, and harassment. They’ve all pleaded not guilty and were released on their own recognizance. Their next court date is July 8 in Criminal Court in St. George.
Sanchez, charged with assault, criminal possession of a weapon, menacing, and harassment, also pleaded not guilty and was released on his own recognizance. He’s due back in court on July 14.
Attorneys for the defendants have not yet responded to requests for comment.
