Juvenile Dies in Accidental Shooting in Mebane, Police Say

A juvenile died Wednesday evening after an accidental shooting in Mebane, according to local police.

Officers responded to reports of gunfire around 7:55 p.m. near the intersection of West Lee Street and South First Street. When they arrived, they discovered a vehicle at the scene and a critically injured juvenile inside.

The child was transported to the hospital but later died from their injuries.

Police recovered a firearm at the scene. Early findings indicate the gun discharged accidentally, and forensic evidence confirmed a single round was fired from inside the vehicle.

Authorities assured the public there is no ongoing safety threat.
