DURHAM, N.C. — Authorities are investigating a deadly shooting that occurred at the Durham Police Department just before 6 p.m. on Wednesday.
During a media briefing later that evening, Durham Police Chief Patrice Andrews explained that a homicide suspect had been under questioning. As officers prepared to transport him after the interview, the suspect lunged forward and seized control of an officer’s firearm.
A struggle broke out, which ended when the suspect was shot. He was rushed to the hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
Chief Andrews stated that, based on the preliminary investigation, “the suspect fired the shot from the gun that was in his control.”
No officers were harmed in the incident. Authorities have not released the suspect’s name at this time.
Andrews noted that she has reviewed much of the video footage related to the incident.
“I am not in the business of speculating, I am not in the business of assuming,” Andrews said. “We work on facts and facts alone, and so, therefore, we will wait until everything is in, all of the investigation is done before making any further statements.”
The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation has taken over the case, which follows standard protocol. The Durham Police Department’s Professional Standards Division is also conducting a separate review.
