The man shot by Chicago police officers over the weekend was wanted by authorities in four Illinois counties, according to court records. According to CPD, Kewion Kingcaid, 21, of Carol Stream, sustained injuries after turning toward officers with a handgun.
According to a Chicago police report, officers responded to the 1900 block of North Austin at 10:30 p.m. Saturday after a woman called 911 and reported that people were carrying guns at a party she was attending.
Cops discovered an “illegal party” at a residence and ordered the crowd to depart, according to the report. Everyone cooperated; however, cops spotted Kingcaid heading in a different direction than the other partygoers while holding an object in front of him, according to the report.
Officers pursued Kingcaid and ordered him to reveal his hands.
“A brief foot pursuit ensued, which led to an officer-involved shooting,” the report added.
According to a CPD media statement, Kingcaid “turned in the direction of officers with a firearm,” and one officer shot him. Officers discovered an “AR-type pistol” with no manufacturer marks on the ground near Kingcaid, along with a loaded 30-round magazine, the report stated.
Prosecutors charged him with aggravated unauthorized use of a weapon and aggravated assault on a peace officer.
According to court records, he also had four active warrants, including one for a 2023 robbery in the Cook County suburbs, another for impeding a peace officer in DuPage County, and others from LaSalle and McHenry counties.
Kingcaid will stay in custody on the warrants and face a second detention hearing on the new claims after being released from the hospital.
