NYPD: 17-year-old arrested in BB gun attack on woman holding baby in Staten Island

A tense nine-hour standoff in Chatham County ended with a suspect in custody after being shot by a deputy.

Deputies responded to a home on Lambert Chapel Road around 3:30 p.m. Wednesday to serve an involuntary commitment order requested by the suspect’s family. As they spoke with family members outside, a man inside a trailer on the property began firing shots.

By 4 p.m., the suspect escalated the situation by shooting directly at deputies, prompting one deputy to return fire, according to the Chatham County Sheriff’s Office.

The standoff continued for hours, with the man firing hundreds of rounds from inside the trailer. It finally ended around 12:30 a.m. when a second deputy fired and struck the suspect.

He was taken to UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill for treatment. His condition has not been disclosed, and authorities have not yet released his name.

No one else was injured during the standoff.

The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) is now leading the investigation, which is standard protocol in officer-involved shootings.
