Does McDonald’s Accept SNAP Benefits as Payment? Here’s What You Should Know

Many people receiving government assistance through programs like SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) or TANF (Temporary Assistance for Needy Families) wonder whether they can use their benefits at fast food restaurants like McDonald’s. While the answer is generally “no,” there are important exceptions depending on your location and eligibility. Here’s a clear breakdown of when and how you might be able to use your benefits at McDonald’s.

SNAP Benefits and Fast Food: What’s the Rule?

SNAP benefits, commonly used through an Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) card, are typically restricted to grocery items intended for home preparation. In most cases, this means you cannot use SNAP to purchase prepared meals or fast food from restaurants, including McDonald’s.

However, there’s an exception to this rule through a special program called the Restaurant Meals Program (RMP).

What Is the Restaurant Meals Program (RMP)?

The RMP is a federally authorized, state-administered option under SNAP that allows specific populations to use their benefits at select restaurants. This program is intended for SNAP recipients who may not be able to cook or store food at home.

To qualify for RMP, individuals must:

  • Be age 60 or older
  • Be disabled
  • Be homeless
  • Or be the spouse of someone who qualifies under these categories

In addition, RMP is only available in select states.

Which States Have the RMP?

As of now, the following states participate in the Restaurant Meals Program:

  • Arizona
  • California
  • Illinois
  • Maryland
  • Michigan
  • New York
  • Rhode Island

If you live in one of these states and meet the eligibility criteria, you may be able to use your EBT card at approved restaurants, including some McDonald’s locations. However, not every McDonald’s within these states participates in the program.

How to Know If Your Local McDonald’s Accepts EBT

Even if you live in an RMP-approved state, you should confirm that your local McDonald’s participates in the program. Here are two easy ways to check:

  • Contact the restaurant directly and ask if they accept EBT through the RMP.
  • Reach out to your state’s EBT or SNAP office for a list of participating restaurants.

Using TANF Benefits at McDonald’s

TANF is a separate form of government assistance that provides financial help to low-income families. While TANF funds may be loaded onto an EBT card, they are not restricted in the same way SNAP benefits are.

You cannot use TANF funds directly at a fast food register, but you can:

  • Withdraw TANF cash benefits from an ATM, and
  • Use the cash to purchase food at McDonald’s or any other restaurant.

TANF eligibility varies by state but generally applies to:

  • Families with children under age 18
  • Pregnant individuals
  • Minors heading their own household

Final Thoughts

Although SNAP benefits don’t typically cover fast food, programs like the Restaurant Meals Program make exceptions for certain vulnerable populations. Additionally, TANF recipients have more flexibility since the funds can be used as cash. If you’re unsure whether you qualify or if your local McDonald’s accepts EBT, the best course of action is to contact your local benefits office or the restaurant itself.

Understanding these options can help you make the most of your benefits while ensuring access to meals when home preparation isn’t possible.
