Cortland City Politician And Girlfriend Both Arrested For DWI Following Crash

A Cortland common councilor and his girlfriend were arrested for DWI following a crash in Cortland, according to police.

Around 9:36 p.m. Friday, police discovered that a truck heading south on Clinton Avenue Extension collided with the back of a sedan pausing to turn onto Interstate 81 North, according to Cortland authorities Chief David Guerrera’s news release.

Common Councilor Wayne F. Schutt, 50, of Cortland, was detained around 10:20 p.m. and charged with DWI, Guerrera stated. Schutt has previously served as the city’s deputy mayor.

TLC Ambulance treated Schutt for head discomfort, Guerrera added. Both cars were severely damaged and had to be towed from the scene, he stated.

While cops were investigating the crash, Schutt’s girlfriend drove to the scene, parked her car, and approached the officers, according to Guerrera, who identified the lady as Schutt’s acquaintance. Schutt and the woman confirm their relationship on Facebook.

Jennifer L. McCracken, 52, of Cortland, was charged with DWI at approximately 10:41 p.m., according to police.

Police handed Schutt traffic penalties for driving while intoxicated, aggravated unlicensed operation, and following too closely.

Schutt and McCracken were processed by the Cortland Police Department and released. The couple is due to appear in Cortland City Court at 9 a.m. on June 9.
