An Arizona mother has been arrested after shooting her 38-year-old son for playing video games too loudly in their house, according to police.
Hazel Benson, 72, is charged with aggravated assault, disorderly conduct, and discharging a firearm inside city boundaries after reportedly shooting her son Saturday night at her Mesa, Arizona, home, according to 12 News.
According to the report, Benson called 911 and told officers she shot at her kid before throwing the gun into a canal. According to court filings, she stated that she had no idea if she had hit him when she fired the gun and that he was at her home’s back door.
Officers discovered her son outside their home with a gunshot wound to the stomach.
According to court filings, Benson contacted police about an hour before the shooting because she was worried that her kid was playing video games too loudly at home.
After the argument, her son went on a stroll to “calm down.” Officers informed Benson on her first call that her son had “legal standing” because he also resided in the home.
When her son returned home, Benson prevented him from entering, she informed officers. He then lunged at her with “his hands in fists at his waistline,” according to court filings.
Benson claimed she then raised the rifle and fired, unknowing that her son had been hit.
According to authorities, she contacted 911 shortly after her kid began “pounding” on the rear door.
Other details, such as her son’s name, were not revealed by police.
He was rushed to the hospital and is in stable condition, according to authorities.
