Two people were killed and nine others wounded in a mass shooting Monday night at Philadelphia’s Fairmount Park, authorities confirmed.
The violence broke out around 10:27 p.m., according to Philadelphia Police Commissioner Kevin Bethel. The victims who died were an adult man and woman. Among the injured are three teenagers, ages 15, 16, and 17.
“Multiple rounds were fired,” said Bethel during a press conference. “Different groups of young people were out here.”
According to CNN affiliate KYW, the shooting occurred after a car meetup. Investigators have not recovered any weapons, and the identities of the victims have not been released.
When asked whether a single shooter was involved, Bethel said, “We don’t know yet. We’ll be able to determine if it was one weapon or multiple weapons, but it’s pretty rapid fire.”
Video from the scene showed a heavy police presence as officers worked late into the night to gather evidence.
Earlier that day, the park had been a lively Memorial Day gathering spot, with families and community members enjoying cookouts, according to WPVI.
