Thirteen individuals were arrested as part of a nationwide crackdown on retail theft, with the Valley Plaza Mall serving as the focal point of the local effort.
On Friday, May 30, 2025, the Bakersfield Police Department teamed up with California Highway Patrol investigators to join the nationwide initiative aimed at curbing organized retail theft. More than 100 law enforcement agencies across the country conducted similar operations in their respective jurisdictions.
The coordinated operation at Valley Plaza Mall included cooperation from major retailers such as Abercrombie & Fitch, Hollister, Old Navy, Target, Bath & Body Works, Macy’s, and JCPenney.
During the operation, officers arrested 13 suspects, including two facing felony charges under Proposition 36, which took effect on December 18, 2024.
Authorities recovered and returned $1,638 worth of stolen merchandise to the participating retailers.
In a statement, Bakersfield Police emphasized the broader impact of these crimes:
“Organized retail theft has a significant financial impact on retailers, leading to increased costs and potential store closures. This operation aims to deter future offenses within our jurisdiction and protect local businesses from theft-related losses.”
