UNION — The City of Union will be placing a 5-year renewal street levy with one additional mill on the November ballot for voter consideration.
Council needed to pass a resolution at Monday night’s meeting accepting the Montgomery County Auditor’s certificate of estimated property tax revenue for the city and finding it necessary to place the renewal levy with one additional mill for the purpose of the street levy fund on the ballot.
In addition, council adopted an ordinance proposing a renewal levy with one additional mill for the street levy fund and certifying the question to be placed on the ballot with the Montgomery County Board of Elections.
The additional one mill would raise roughly $90,000 per year over the course of the five years.
“The $90,000 would basically cover the increase in operating and maintenance expenses that we’ve had the last five years,” said City Manager John Applegate. “If you remember, we paid an additional $75,000 for salt last year due to a price increase, which just about wipes out the one mill if we did have it in place.”
Councilmember Robin Perkins noted that the additional funds would not go very far based on the increased price for salt. Applegate agreed and stated, “It’s just kind of keeping our head above water, but not by much.”
“We did go over this extensively during our budget committee meetings and it is the minimum we need to just keep our head above water,” said Vice Mayor John Bruns. “We’re not trying to get enough to do any projects or anything, just to stay level and that’s about it.”
Applegate said if the levy fails council would have to place another renewal on the ballot as the city could not operate without a street levy. Originally passed in 1978, the current 5-year renewal levy expires this year.
