TROY — After coming out flat in the first quarter Monday at Troy in the sectional tournament against Stebbins the Northmont girls basketball team had to fight hard to rally to tie the score at halftime before going on to post a 60-56 victory.

Trailing 17-9 after the first quarter Northmont got seven second quarter points from guard Makayla Cooper and baskets from Jenna Hoschouer, Anna Mangen, a bucket and free throw from Salena Roberts and a blocked shot by Gabby Kline to knot the score 25-25 at halftime.

Hoschouer came out on fire in the third quarter to score three consecutive baskets to power a 6-0 run to put the Lady Bolts up 31-25. Cooper later nailed a 3-pointer to boost Northmont’s lead to 37-29 prompting Stebbins to call timeout at the 4:48 mark. Northmont played well to maintain a 45-38 lead entering the final quarter and increased its lead to 50-38 with 7:15 remaining, but after that Stebbins began to battle back.

The Lady Indians went on a 12-0 run to cut Northmont’s lead to 50-48. Katrina Murphy started the Stebbins rally by burying a 3-pointer. Alyssa Bowman scored inside and Mackenzie Lingg buried another trey and added a jump shot to pull Stebbins within a basket.

After a Roberts free throw Stebbins got a basket from Madison Cook and another by Bree Bransford to take a 52-51 lead with less than three minutes remaining.

Northmont regained control on a pair of free throws by Hoschouer and a basket by Roberts to go up 55-52. Stebbins closed the gap to one with 51 seconds left, but the Lady Bolts sank three of six from the free throw line down the stretch while the Lady Indians offense went silent.

For the Lady Bolts, it was their first tournament win as a team since 2012 when they posted a 56-43 victory over Tecumseh and a first tournament win for Coach Bethany Kincer who never experienced a victory in tournament when she played for Northmont. Kincer graduated in 2007 and played both basketball and softball.

Her team’s lead evaporating came as no surprise.

“That is going to happen against a team like Stebbins,” Kincer said. “They shoot and make a lot of threes. I told the girls from the get-go that basketball is a game of runs and that we just have to finish with the last run against a team like that. I told the girls before the game that I never got to experience in high school a tournament win and as a coach I haven’t got to experience a tournament win, so this is a first for all of us. We had a little scare, but I think we did a good job pursuing through and making sure we hit a couple free throws to get us over the hump. The girls wanted to make it interesting, that’s for sure.”

Kincer also noted the determined play of Hoschouer early in the second half as a determining factor in her team’s win. Hoschouer scored a game-high 19 points.

“Jenna came out on fire in the second half. She was playing relentless not wanting us to lose,” Kincer added. “This is a tight bunch of girls and they don’t want the season to be over yet. They just keep pushing through and wanting to move on to the next game.”

With the victory Northmont advances to play the winner of the Franklin vs. Fairborn game on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. also at Troy High School.
