VANDALIA — A pair of botched in-bounds passes led to a pair of Northmont turnovers in the final minute of play Friday night at Butler and ultimately led to the Lady Bolts demise.
Leading 50-46 with 52 seconds remaining the pair of turnovers on in-bounds passes led to nine point swing as the Lady Aviators walked away with a 55-50 victory.
“We work on these situations every day in practice and go through them,” said Northmont Coach Bethany Kincer. “We took care of the ball and went to the free throw line and missed a couple of free throws and Butler went down the floor and we gave up an open shot. We have also talked about those situations in practice too. Then we gave up a big offensive rebound that allowed Butler to tie the game. It’s just the little things that we’ve talked about every day in practice that proved costly. We’ve got more to work on. I think was a good learning experience for us and we will be able to take strides from here.”
Willow Knight and Brittney Petrosky did the most damage against Northmont in the second half. Knight scored 11 second half points to finish with 20 and Petrosky had eight points in the final two quarters to finish with 16 as the pair led the Butler comeback.
With 39 seconds left Olivia Schoenherr drew a foul from Northmont’s Antonette Dorsey and sank both free throws to cut the Lady Bolts lead to 50-48. Erin Mangen, who led Northmont with 15 points, threw the ensuing inbounds pass out of bounds and Butler capitalized on the miscue when Tyree Fletcher scored on a rebound to tie the game 50-50.
Butler came up with a steal with 22 seconds left and Jenna Hoschouer was forced to foul Petrosky with 10.7 seconds left. Petrosky sank one of two free throws to put Butler up 51-50.
Northmont called timeout after Hoschouer grabbed the rebound on the missed second free throw but the Lady Bolts botched the inbounds pass and D.J. Shepherd fouled Knight after Knight scooped up the errant pass. Knight knocked down both free throws to put Butler up 53-50.
Northmont missed a 3-point shot and Abbie Schoenherr grabbed the rebound and drew a foul with 1.4 seconds left. She sank both shots from the charity stripe to seal the 55-50 win for Butler.
The Lady Bolts jumped out to a 15-5 lead and led 19-12cat the end of the first quarter. Butler rallied to take a 26-25 lead early in the third period but Northmont led the remainder of the contest until the Lady Aviators tied the game 50-50 with 24 seconds left.
The Lady Bolts will travel to Greenville on Wednesday then return home to face Trotwood on Saturday, Dec. 3 at 1 p.m.
