CLAYTON — In an effort to widen National Road from Haber Road to the Northmont middle and high school campus the city of Clayton is seeking a grant from the Ohio Public Works Commission for the project.

A traffic light has also been proposed for the Haber and National intersection. A turn lane would be installed on westbound National for access to the Northmont campus as well as a turn lane on Haber Road to turn west on National.

“We believe this project is going to greatly benefit everyone in the Northmont community,” said Jack Kuntz, director of development. “What this grant application is for is $835,760 to Ohio Public Works Commission for the funds to be put towards this project. The city does have some funds budgeted as a local match and Northmont School District is also putting resources towards this project.”

Vice Mayor Tim Gorman said he felt the reason this conversation was started was due to concerns of the safety of students of Northmont High School, not necessarily problems with the Haber Road intersection.

“When they rebuilt the school they didn’t put in any funds to deal with the road out in front,” Gorman said. “After many meetings they came to an agreement that after they occupied the school that we could fix the roads out in front.”

As part of the project the city would have to purchase some property to accommodate the road widening.

“There would be some property that we would have to purchase as part of this project, a small amount, and it has been budgeted as part of the project,” Kuntz said.

Councilman Mike Stevens asked if the land owner was aware the city would need to purchase easement for the project. City Manager Rick Rose said that no conversations with land owners have taken place yet.
