WEST LIBERTY — Final preparations are being made as the Northmont Science Olympiad team heads to the Regional Tournament this weekend in Piqua.

The Middle School team has a better understanding of where they rank in the region, after competing in the final Invitational of the season on Saturday, March 5, at West Liberty Salem.

The Middle School sent two teams to compete in the 27 team event, and the top team scored 255 points, finishing tenth in the field. Solon Middle School, outside of Cleveland, was the top ranking Middle School, scoring 88 points for the first place finish.

Schools in Northmont’s region were Centerville’s Tower Heights Middle School, who placed second, and Centerville’s Magsig Middle School, who took fifth overall. West Liberty-Salem placed ahead of Northmont by 49 points, and Watts Middle School of Centerville placed behind by 33 points. These schools will be the primary Northmont challengers at the Regional Competition.

At West Liberty-Salem, the team medal winners were freshmen She’Vaughn Brown and Ian Underburger, who won third place in ‘Write It/Do It.’ There were three pairs of fourth place ribbon winners: Brianna Gilson and Michael VanLuvender in ‘BioProcess Lab;’ Jack Knudsen and Hailee Seagraves in ‘Bridge Building;’ and Christian Hinegardner and Connor Zechar in ‘Scrambler.’

The remaining wins were sixth place finishes for Brown and Underburger in ‘Bridge Building;’ for Kody Barnett and Underburger in ‘Road Scholar;’ and for Mason Flora and Xander Hughes in ‘Wind Power.’

“West Liberty-Salem was our last practice to get ready for Regionals this coming Saturday,” said Northmont Science Olympiad Coach Jim Witters. “I have faith that all the students have learned from all of these invitationals and that they are ready to put their best foot forward to qualify to go on to State Competition in April.”

The Northmont Science Olympiad teams are partially funded through support of the Northmont Education Foundation and the Northmont Rotary Club. Students interested in science are encouraged to attend the weekly meetings at the Middle School, starting in the fall of the year.
