ENGLEWOOD — In the first meeting of 2016 Monday for the Northmont Board of Education held at Englewood Elementary, organizational items were abundant on the agenda. Every year, at the first meeting, general “housekeeping” such as election of officers and committee appointments must be voted on and recorded.

Bruce Clapp nominated Linda Blum to continue her role as president.

“Our Board would not be where we are without the leadership of Linda Blum,” said Clapp. “Everyone knows they can talk to Linda and everyone knows she bleeds green blood.”

The nomination was closed and seconded by member Jane Woodie. The board then voted unanimously for Mrs. Blum.

Member Tom Walker then nominated Clapp to retain his role as vice president, saying “he is a solid member of this board” and referring to Mr. Clapp’s involvement on the MVCTC board as well. The vote was, again, unanimous.

Board members Tom Walker and Dr. Gerry Espeleta were sworn in for their next four-year term as voted in the November election.

Englewood Elementary Teacher Diane McCarroll nominated parent Cristy Beccue for the Superintendent’s Helping Hands award that was presented during the evening. In her nomination, McCarroll said that Beccue volunteers at Englewood Elementary and the Kleptz Early Learning Center. She makes copies, laminates, tutors students, and helps teachers every week.

“Last year, she volunteered to make copies for me before I even knew her,” said McCarroll. “She is always warm, friendly and caring with our students and I appreciate everything she does to make a difference in our school.”

In the Superintendent’s report, Dr. Zatik thanked everyone for participating in the previous day’s dedication of the new High School.

“It was a phenomenal event and the community showed how proud they are of the new facility by showing up even in bad weather,” said Zatik.

Dr. Zatik also proposed having a High School Open House on Sunday, March 13 so anyone who missed the dedication can have another chance to see the building and the student performing groups.

In other Board Reports, Vice President Clapp reminded everyone of the Roll of Recognition nomination deadline Friday, January 15.

Student Board Representative Samantha Johnson shared building activities:

• Englewood Elementary – Details are being completed for a trip to the YMCA for the students who participated in the winter break assignment.

• Englewood Hills – Students are excited to be back after break.

• Kleptz Early Learning Center – Jump Rope For Your Heart will kick off on January 19.

• Northmoor – Talent Show auditions will be this week and Aspirations students are hosting Spirit Week to raise money for new swings.

• Northwood –Mrs. Sally Moore is acting principal while Dr. Richardson is on extended leave.

• Union – Preparations are under way for the Super Hero Mother/Son Dance on January 30.

• Middle School – The Winter Sports Pep Rally is Friday.

• High School – The Wrestling team placed 2nd out of 15 teams at Valley View this past weekend and the Academic Challenge team won the Eastern Iowa History Bowl. Northmont has now won tournaments in 13 different states over the last six years.
