NEW CARLISLE — Northmont traveled to Tecumseh’s Spitzer Stadium Saturday for a boys soccer match and a rugby game broke out.

The Arrows, who have a reputation as a physical team, played extremely aggressive and before long both teams were pushing, pulling, shoving and colliding with each other as the officials stood by chewing on their whistles for the majority of the contest.

The lack of calls enraged fans on both sides of the field and soon the cat calls began emanating from the stands. Fans in the stands hollered, “You’re missing a good game ref!” and “SAY Soccer offers free officiating classes!” as well as the standard, “You’ve got to be kidding me ref!”

The rough and tumble play continued from beginning to end. Tecumseh’s aggressiveness appeared to disrupt Northmont’s attack, with the Thunderbolts missing a few key scoring opportunities. In the end the game ended in a 0-0 tie.

Northmont took 13 shots on goal and played strong defense to limit Tecumseh to only four shots.

Tecumseh’s record moved to 1-3-1 overall while the Thunderbolts are now 3-3-1.

“I think in many ways we played well as far as doing all the basics right,” said Northmont Coach John Boucuvalas. “We just needed a little bit of a break and didn’t get one. The nice thing is that we didn’t panic and Tecumseh never really had any real chances of scoring. The chances that we had early I think we took for granted, and as the game went on we had to strain a little bit harder and we weren’t as relaxed. We put ourselves into a little bit of a bind. I think we went into the game thinking it was going to be an easy one and we learned our lesson here.”

Tecumseh lost to Butler 9-0 on Sept. 5, but Northmont also fell to Aviators 2-0 on Sept. 10.

“I think we took Tecumseh for granted a little bit,” Boucuvalas added. “We are trying to let the players play and let them sort things out, and I’m confident they will, but it has just been a process. I think we will be ready for our next game. I think we are sorting out a few kinks and I think we are due for a little bit of good luck. I’m confident we will get some momentum here shortly.”

Northmont plays at Fairmont on Tuesday then returns home to host Carroll on Thursday and Fairfield on Saturday at 5 p.m.
