CLAYTON — The Northmont boys volleyball team got off to a 2-0 start in conference play this week. The team started the week with a tough win over Fairmont on Tuesday.
The Bolts started the match sluggish. Fairmont took the first set 25-19. Northmont never could get in rhythm but fought hard to take the next two sets 25-21, 25-19. After taking the 3rd set, Northmont dug themselves in another hole allowing Fairmont to build a 19-11 lead. Dylan Sell brought the team back, fighting off two timeouts, with a 7 point serving run. Northmont was able to take set four and the match. The team was led by Dawson Walker with 20 kills and 5 blocks, Ryan Foy with 40 assists and 6 blocks and Abdihafid Abas with 7 kills.
The Thunderbolts defeated Centerville last Thursday night. Northmont started the match with a lot of energy and took the first set 25-18. The Bolts went into the second set feeling too comfortable and dropped the set 16-25. The Elks finished the set by winning 7 of the last 8 points. The rest of the night was a battle between the two rivals.
The teams split the 3rd and 4th sets 30-28 and 25-27. Northmont pulled off some big serves and a few blocks to finish on top of the final set 16-14.
“We are continuing to work on getting the team to buy into the fact that we have to be more disciplined on our block and our passing,” said Coach S. Jim Smith. “These two things really hurt us tonight. The team hung together and made just enough clutch big plays to finish on top. Our guys have been fighting hard and winning the close matches all season.”
The Bolts were led by Dawson Walker with 20 kills, 7 blocks, 3 aces and 12 digs, Ryan Foy with 32 assists, 7 kills, and 13 digs, Dylan Sell with 15 digs, Abdihafid Abas with 9 kills and Matt Bridenbaugh with 7 kills and 14 digs.
Northmont is now 5-1 overall and 2-0 in conference play.
The Thunderbolts play at West Carrollton on Tuesday, host Cincinnati St. Xavier on Wednesday and host Trotwood-Madison on April 18. All three matches are set for 6 p.m.
