CLAYTON — Versailles edged Northmont 8-7 in the ACME sectional losers’ bracket game late Sunday afternoon to effectively end the Tancs post season hopes.
The Tigers pulled off an upset for sure. Versailles improved to 6-6 overall while Northmont ended its season at 13-4.
“I thought for sure we would be in the driver’s seat throughout the tournament because we have played so well all season,” said Tancs Head Coach Gerald Rosendahl. “We just didn’t hit the ball these final two games until the last two innings and by that time it was too late.”
Indeed, the Tancs trailed Versailles 7-2 entering the bottom of the fifth inning. The Tigers got three runs in the first inning and four in the top of the fifth. Northmont got two in the bottom of the second and one in the fifth. Versailles increased its lead to 8-3 with one run in the sixth.
The Tancs rallied with two runs in both the sixth and seventh innings, but failed to come up with the tying run.
Grize, Niekamp, McEldowny and Heitkamp combined for eight hits and seven RBI for the Tigers.
Jonathan Eber went 2 for 3 with two RBI to lead Northmont’s attack. Austin Kossoudji went 1 for 4 with two runs.
Collin Hobert hit a two-run double in the bottom of the seventh but McEldowny struck out Kossoudji to end the threat.
Both teams committed four fielding errors.
Seth Oberer took the loss on the mound. He pitched four innings, gave up five hits, six runs with three walks and two strikeouts. Noah Birdsall pitched three innings, gave up four hits, two runs with two walks and four strikeouts.
