TROY — First singles player senior Andrew Correll qualified for the Division I district when the Northmont Boys Tennis Team competed in the sectional Thursday at Troy High School.

Correll received a No. 3 seed in the Division 1 sectional and had a first round bye. In the second round he defeated Daichi Urata of Sidney 6-0, 6-0. In the third round he defeated Aman Dhingra of Springfield 6-0, 6-1. Fourth round he defeated Tyler Frantz of Bellefontaine 6-1, 6-2 which qualified him for the district match.

Correll faced No. 1 seed Nick Pavlatos of Springfield on Saturday at Dayton Center Courts in the sectional final with Pavlatos scoring a 6-2, 6-2 victory.

Correll will now compete in the Division I district at Centerville High School on Thursday. Following a brief coaches meeting at 9 a.m. the opening two rounds of the tournament will commence. The semifinals and finals will be played Saturday, May 21.

When asked how he felt about qualifying for district, Correll stated, “I love it. It’s so nice to be a senior and to be able to qualify for district. It’s awesome. I can’t wait.”

Correll knew his match with Pavlatos would be a challenge.

“Nick played really well and I thought I played pretty good, but he played a little better,” Correll said.

Four singles players and four doubles teams from Division I and Division II will qualify for the state tournament, which will be held Friday, May 27 and Saturday, May 28 at the Linder Family Tennis Center in Mason.

“Congratulations Andrew! I am very proud of you and all of your hard work,” said Northmont Coach Jess Maio.

Second singles player Justin Dorsten lost in his second round sectional match 6-0, 6-0 to Will Thompson of Springfield.

Third singles player Josh Farinet lost in the first round 6-1, 6-0 to Josh Smith of Greenville.

First doubles team Austin Lucas and Cameron Daniel lost in a hard fought match 7-6 (7-5), 1-6, 1-6 to Carter Hench and Jack Johnston of Troy.

Second doubles team Nathan Webb and Dan Adams opened sectional play with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Ross Fike and Trevor Plsek of Vandalia-Butler. Webb and Adams then defeated Markley and Stevenson of Bellfontaine 6-0, 6-3 before losing in the third round to Andrew Magoteaux and Nick Prus of Troy 6-0, 6-0.

“The 2016 season has to come to an end for these six players,” Maio stated. “Congratulations on another tough, hard fought season. I am very proud of all of you for never giving up and for keeping your head held high even through the tough losses. Seniors, we will miss you next year and we wish you the best of luck in the future. Thank you for all your hard work, dedication, and leadership and for being outstanding role models for the underclassman.”
