CLAYTON — Wayne ran into a red hot hitting Northmont softball team Thursday night as the Lady Bolts ended up scoring a 12-2 run rule victory in six innings.
Northmont pounded out 19 hits to improve to 4-0 in Central Division play and 8-2 overall while Wayne fell to 1-3 in the division and 3-5 overall. The Lady Warriors contributed to their own downfall by committing four fielding errors.
“There is not a whole to say here. They hit the ball and we made too many errors,” said Wayne Coach John Chesley. “This should have been a ballgame, instead it was a joke. Out of their 12 runs about seven or eight were unearned, so that’s what happens.”
Lady Bolts’ senior catcher Taylor Hoover continued to swing a hot bat by going 4 for 4 with a pair of doubles to lead the Northmont attack. Starting pitcher Whitney Fiedler helped her own cause by going 3 for 4. Emily Ritchie also went 3 for 4 while Lizzie Ritchie and Cassy Lewis both went 2 for 3. Erin Mangen belted a home run in the sixth inning and cousin Cory Mangen scored a run to contribute to the Northmont onslaught.
Northmont took a 1-0 first inning lead but Wayne countered with a run in the top of the second. The Lady Bolts added three runs in the bottom of the fourth and Wayne got one back in the top of the fifth. Northmont responded with one in the home half of the fifth and then sealed the victory with six runs in the bottom of the sixth.
Wayne had some highlights of its own during the loss. Catcher Marissa Philpott made a nice tag out at the plate when Erin Mangen tried to score on a base hit and Wayne infielders snared some almost out of reach flares that could have cut the game short even sooner if those balls had fallen for base hits.
“We definitely pounded on the ball and created our own opportunities,” said Northmont Coach Kris Mangen. “We only hit five pop-ups, so we definitely crushed the ball and they made some defensive mistakes. Erin Mangen crushed the ball on her home run and Taylor Hoover has been killing the ball. We have different people stepping up in our lineup every game. Whitney Fiedler pitched real well and defensively we didn’t have any errors. We are still switching our lineup around to see what works best for us but I am real happy with the way we are playing.”
