GERMANTOWN — The Northmont wrestling team got strong performances from several of its athletes to post a second place finish Saturday at the Valley View Invitational Tournament.
Graham dominated the tournament to accrue 343 points to take first place honors with Northmont tallying 194.5 points. Graham’s B-team took third with 157 points.
Northmont had 10 kids qualify for the final rounds to compete for first through sixth place.
“This is the second week in a row that we have finished second,” said Northmont Coach Scott Newburg. “We knew when Graham was going to be there that it was going to be a tough road facing good wrestlers in every weight class. Our goal was to go in and wrestle hard with the same philosophy of attacking each opponent the same regardless of his record. I was really happy with the way we did that.”
Chad Craft (113 pounds) scored an 8-3 decision over Jeffrey Thomas of Graham to take first place.
“Chad lost to Thomas 2-1 at the Holiday Tournament but this time he wrestled hard the entire six minutes and dominated the match,” Newburg said.
Twin brother Chase Craft (120 pounds) lost a 15-2 major decision to Justin Stickley of Graham to place second.
Hunter Terrill (138 pounds) lost by a fall in 1:46 to Brent Moore of Graham to place second.
Ezra Smith (132 pounds) lost by a fall in 34 seconds to Tyler Bentley of Carlisle to place fourth.
Josh Winston took third place at 145 winning by a fall (2:58) versus William Taylor of Stivers.
The most controversial match of the day came in the182 pound match for third place. Northmont freshman Gabe Newburg scored a last second takedown in the third round to score an apparent 3-1 decision against Kolton Dillon of Preble Shawnee, but the scoring table waived off the points by telling the mat official that time had expired. The match went into overtime where Kolton wound up winning 3-1.
Dylan Moran took third place at 195 winning by a fall (0:52) over Trey Vance of Graham.
Chuck Saul took fourth at 220 losing by a fall (0:52) to Mason Williams of Preble Shawnee.
David Henson took third place at 285 pounds winning by a fall (2:35) over Trent Wilson of Valley View.
106 pound Luke Holloway placed sixth losing by a fall (2:21) to Cole Houser of Ben Logan.
Solomon Miller took fifth place at 160 pounds winning by a fall (0:32) over Austin Napier of Valley View.
Bryan Heyward (170) won by forfeit to take fifth place against Ian Hayes of Cincinnati Country Day.
“Everyone did a good job. We were able to place nine guys in the top four,” Newburg added. “We just continue to wrestle hard. We talk about taking two steps forward and not one step back at each match. The kids have been moving forward all year long and they are wrestling the way that we want them to. All of the kids are hard workers and it is really paying off. I think we are going to do pretty good the rest of the season and going into the State Duals coming up here in a couple of weeks where we will be able to wrestle some good competition.”
Northmont will face Miamisburg and Edgewood at Miamisburg High School at 6 p.m. Wednesday.
