Chase Craft was named Northmont’s ‘Champion of the Week for his victories against Colerain and Milford.

Northmont Coach Scott Newburg was happy with the victories but felt his team wasn’t ready for competition that day.

“Actually we came out kind of flat,” Newburg said. “I thought we would come out a little stronger after having a good week of practice and a good showing up at Howell where we finished fifth out of 17 teams. I have felt over the years that the more structured the kids’ days are by being in school, coming to practice and then going home to do homework before bed they kind of wrestle better. When they have more free time, like we did that day on the first day of Christmas break, I think they laid around too much during the day. When they got off the bus I could just tell they just weren’t 100 percent ready to go.”

Newburg felt his team picked it up toward the end of the matches, but initially his wrestlers didn’t attack their opponents like they should have.

“After we got going I think we wrestled like we should have,” Newburg stated. “We still have five freshmen in the lineup and all of them are doing a good job. They are taking to our practice philosophy of wrestling hard every day and attacking an opponent that hasn’t won a match just like they would if he was undefeated. Chase and Chad Craft wrestled well again. You can tell that all of the time they put in during the off season that they are a notch above where they were last year. Chuck Saul is really doing a good job. He missed last year and played football this year and is really starting to get in a groove. He is one of the strongest kids on the team. David Henson is doing a fantastic job. He has probably picked it up more than anybody from last year. He has only lost one match to a state runner-up from Michigan and is six and one with six pins.”

Newburg also gave credit to his son, Gabe, Hunter Terrill and Luke Holloway who are freshmen.

“All three are wrestling well and not like they are freshmen, so they are helping us pick it up too,” he added.

Northmont will participate in the 57 team Greater Miami Valley Coaches Association Holiday Tournament at Wright State’s Nutter Center on Monday and Tuesday.
