MASON — Five players who achieved great success during the 2015 season saw their post season end at the district tournament Thursday at the ATP Tennis Center.
“This was the first time in years that we’ve had multiple players qualify for district, especially all three singles players. It’s almost unheard of,” said Northmont Coach Christine Hall.
Senior first singles player Akilah Parker, who went 5-0 in the conference and 17-2 overall, lost to sophomore Amanda Reinhart of Milford 6-1, 6-3.
“At district it is always tough when you face Cincinnati players,” Hall noted. “Sometimes their number four players are better than our number ones, so you just have to hope for a good draw. Parker, being a one seed, we thought going in she had the best chance possible of advancing. She faced the number four seed Amanda Reinhart who had a different style of play than Akilah likes. Akilah likes to play against opponents with a lot more power and pace but Reinhart had a lot of spin and placement on her shots. That threw Akilah off a little bit and she probably was a little nervous too.”
Hall said Cincinnati players are accustomed to that type of play, but that her players rarely ever come up against a player that relies on finesse shots.
Junior Marissa Anderson (16-4 overall) lost her first match 6-0, 6-1 to freshman Caitlin Fisher of Turpin. Fisher made it to the quarter finals before losing.
Senior Kennedy Harden (17-3 overall) also lost in the first round to sophomore Emily Thomas of Princeton, 6-0, 6-0. Thomas ended up district champion scoring a 6-0, 6-1 win over Kelli Niehaus of Mt. Notre Dame in the final. Thomas is a heavy favorite to win the state, according to Hall.
“Anderson and Harden played awesome and their scores were not reflective of how close some of the games actually were,” Hall said.
Northmont’s double team of senior Morgan Grandfield and junior Michelle Hibbard lost their opening match to senior Jenny Duma and sophomore Gabriella O’Connor of Ursuline, 6-0, 6-0.
“It was great weather and a great day and just a lot of fun to be down there getting a chance to play on those courts where the top pros play. It was pretty amazing,” Hall added.
