BEAVERCREEK — Northmont kept its divisional title hopes alive Wednesday by battling Beavercreek to a 1-1.

The Lady Bolts are now tied for first place in the Central Division of the Greater Western Ohio Conference with Centerville with identical 2-0-1 division records. Beavercreek is now 1-0-2 in division play with ties against both Northmont and Centerville.

Beavercreek scored with 15:44 remaining in the first half on a goal by sophomore defender Sydney Cleverly off an assist by junior forward Taylor Harlow.

The Lady Beavers turned up the pressure after their first goal, but Northmont caught a break late in the half. As the Lady Bolts were making a run on the Beavercreek goal the Lady Beavers got called for a violation setting Northmont up with a direct kick from the left side of the field on what almost amounted to a corner kick.

Junior Jordyn Lubeach looped a kick into the goal to tie the game 1-1 with 1:10 remaining in the half.

That proved to be the last goal of the night. Beavercreek played aggressive soccer throughout the second half and added an extra forward to its attack. Northmont played staunch defense to rebuff Beavercreek’s attack to escape with a 1-1 tie.

Northmont Coach Ted Mergler credited sophomore Emily Howard for keeping Beavercreek’s Sierra Peacock off balance throughout the game.

“We had to shut down Peacock and Emily Howard frustrated her all night,” Mergler said. “By limiting her touches it paid off. A tie keeps us in contention for first place in the division. Playing Beavercreek is always a physical game. The girls played hard the entire 80 minutes. We knew Beavercreek had a more high power offense than our’s so we pulled one of our center midfielders out and it gave us more chances up top.”

Northmont will battle Centerville for a showdown for first place at the hostile environs at Magsig Middle School on State Route 725 in warm and cheerful Centerville on Wednesday, Oct. 7.
