CLAYTON — Northmont matched an early Carroll goal Monday night but couldn’t find the net the remainder of the game as the Patriots walked away with a 3-1 victory.
With the win Carroll improves to 8-2-1 overall while Northmont falls to 6-5-1 overall.
Abby McNamara scored for Carroll eight minutes and 39 seconds into the match to put the Patriots up 1-0. Northmont answered with a goal of its own less than a minute later when Brittany Weatherford nailed a line drive kick high off the right post and into the net from 30 yards out to tie it 1-1.
Carroll went up 2-1 with 23:31 left in the half on goal by Tiffany O’Grady. As she attacked the goal Northmont goal keeper Ashley Trottier came out of the box to try and block the shot but O’Grady managed to launch the ball past her to give the Patriots a 2-1 lead, which held up at halftime.
Carroll added another goal with 20:26 remaining in the second half to secure a 3-1 victory. Carroll had 11 shots on goal while Northmont generated seven.
“Carroll is now 8-2-1 so they are not a pushover team. We just didn’t have any answers for them defensively,” said Northmont coach Ted Mergler. “We just kept losing our marks in the back and offensively we just couldn’t generate anything. We just didn’t have answers for the problems that were occurring on the field.”
On Wednesday, Sept. 23 the Lady Bolts scored an important 1-0 division victory at Wayne to move into first place in the Greater Western Ohio Conference Central Division.
“Obviously that was a big game for us, one that means a lot more being a divisional game and right now that puts us at the top of the division,” Mergler added. “We still have to play the two toughest teams in the division, Beavercreek on Wednesday and Centerville the following Wednesday, both on the road. Beavercreek and Centerville tied each other 3-3 when we beat Wayne, so we still have a lot of work ahead of us in the division.”
Weatherford scored an unassisted goal to give Northmont the victory over Wayne.
The lady Bolts play at Beavercreek on Wednesday, play at home as the visiting team against Chaminade-Julienne on Monday, Oct. 5 and then travel to Centerville on Oct. 7.
