CLAYTON — Northmont faced a tough Beavercreek squad Sept. 3 on the Thunderbolts’ home course of Meadowbrook at Clayton losing to the Beavers 165 to 176 to fall to 1-2 in division play.
The Beavers, 2-1 in division play, were led by Alex Flick who shot a round of 39.
Wes Kincaid and sophomore Drew Johnson led the Thunderbolts with rounds of 42 while senior Luke Knapke came in with a 44. Landon Hill and Alec Avdakov each shot rounds of 48.
On Aug. 31 Northmont played a tri match at Miami Valley golf Club against Chaminade-Julienne and Troy. The course played long and difficult with severe weather threatening on the horizon. The Thunderbolts scored 168 to defeat C-J (186) while Troy won the overall match with a 161.
“The greens were fast and unforgiving to wayward approach shots,” said Northmont Coach Nathan Hannahan. “We have faced Troy several times this season and we keep improving with every match. Troy’s total of 161 proved that, with a stroke saved here and there, Northmont is a team they need to be aware of the rest of the season.”
All four Northmont seniors posted solid rounds led by Shawn Richards and Luke Knapke with a pair of 41s. Richards’ round included birdies on holes one and six.
“Luke was steady all day from tee to green. Had a couple more approach putts fallen his way, Luke could have easily been in the 30s for the first time this season,” Hannahan noted.
Senior Landon Hill recorded a solid round with a 42, his best varsity score so far. Kincaid finished with a round of 44 even though he struggled a bit during the match. Avdakov got off to a shaky 7-over-par on the first four holes but fought back to go 2-over-par on the last five holes to post a 45.
“Alec rolled in a smooth birdie putt on the par 3 fifth hole tonight,” Hannahan noted. “Drew Johnson chipped in for birdie on the par 5 first hole to get his round moving in the right direction early. After another short birdie putt dropped on the par 4 fourth hole, Drew was even on the day. Unfortunately, the greens got the better of Drew on his way to clubhouse. Still, his round of 45 proved that he has a lot to offer as he continues to gain valuable varsity experience. This was undoubtedly our best team performance this season.”
