CLAYTON — With 10 seniors and seven juniors, this year’s Northmont soccer team has plenty of returning players with varsity experience. The big question is, who will step up to lead the offense?

The team has eight returning starters overall.

“We are returning pretty good numbers from last year in terms of experienced players,” said Coach John Boucuvalas.

He cited senior defender Mason Reidy, a big strong athlete, as one of the team’s key players. After that, Boucuvalas feels the rest of the lineup is deep but with no big stars.

“It will probably depend on the day who is going to be an impact player,” Boucuvalas noted. “Reidy will be a key player, but this is an interesting group because I can field two quality squads. When we scrimmage, it’s hard to tell who the stars are so it will be an interesting year. I’m hoping we go under the radar a little bit and kind of rely on the team aspect versus star players.”

In addition to Reidy, senior players include midfielders Brayden Haskell, Terrel Benne, Garrett Boeckman, and Tanner Yingling; defenders Brian Diehl and Jacob Glass, and forwards Chris Okos and Austin Bellar and goalkeeper Luke Brackman.

Junior players include midfielders Kellen Oshea, Drew Mackay, and Chase Griesheimer; forward Tyler Weaver, defenders Collin Hobert and Noah Birdsall and goalkeeper Justin Schuh.

Sophomores are midfielders Noah Teague, Caden Cronebach, and Tanner Juskae, defender Dylan Beck, and forward Matthew Eilerman,

“Justin Schuh will be our starting goalkeeper,” Boucuvalas said. “He’s solid. He was on the team last year. He gives our team a lot of confidence on the field and that will be a big part of the season. He is just a very good athlete.”

As far as key offensive players, Boucuvalas cited sophomore Dylan Beck as a solid sweeper that would factor into the team’s success.

“It’s a team probably with a lot of good experience on defense and we are hoping the offense sorts itself out,” Boucuvalas added. “Garrett Boeckman will be one to watch who can get us some goals, but it’s hard to say who else is going to be our goal scorers. We are hoping we can figure out a way to score some goals, but we’ve got a lot of experience. I am hoping our defense buys us some time for us to figure out how our offense is going to be this year.”

Northmont will open regular season play on Tuesday, August 25 at West Carrollton.
