CLAYTON — The SafeWise Company named the City of Clayton to its ‘50 Safest Cities in Ohio’ list for 2015. Clayton was ranked 43rd overall and was one of only two Dayton area suburbs, and the only northern suburb, to receive this recognition. Springboro was the other Dayton suburb to make the list and was ranked No. 28.
To compile this report, SafeWise used the most recent FBI crime data from 2013 to analyze and rank these cities, which all have a minimum population of 8,000 people.
“Ohio continues to shine as a state where neighbors work together to keep crime low,” said SafeWise Security Analyst Rebecca Edwards. “The cities on our list are shining examples of the difference community awareness, partnership with law enforcement, and civic pride can make.”
The SafeWise website had this to say about Clayton:
“A suburb of Dayton, Clayton is an idyllic community whose mission is to continually improve the city for the betterment of the residents. With that mission in mind, Clayton started a number of green initiatives to encourage recycling and educate residents on how they can reduce their carbon footprint. The Clayton Police Department has a few initiatives of their own, including Text-A-Tip, which makes it easy for community members to send in crime tips, and a Vacation Watch program. Through these initiatives and many more, the police department helped reduce reports of violent crime from nine incidents in 2012 to only five in 2013. The city reported zero murders, rapes, aggravated assaults or arsons in 2013.”
Violent Crimes per 1,000: 0.37
Property Crimes per 1,000: 15.89
“It’s nice to be recognized as one of the top 50 safest cities in Ohio,” said Clayton Police Chief Matt Hamlin. “According to the FBI standards we have one of lowest rates of per capita crime in Montgomery County, so it’s nice that SafeWise has confirmed it according to their standards.”
