DAYTON — Premier Health announced today that it will hold “welcome” receptions at its Dayton-area hospitals on July 24 for new graduate registered nurses who have joined the health system’s staff after completing their studies at local colleges and universities.
All new graduates who work for Premier Health will be immersed in the system’s new 18-week residency program, which facilitates the enhancement of clinical skills, and which typically results in graduates performing at the competency level of a nurse with 17 months’ experience. Premier Health sponsors the program in partnership with Versant®, a Florida-based organization that offers oversight and evidence-based competencies for the professional development of registered nurses.
According to Premier Health Vice President & Chief Nursing Officer Sylvain “Syl” Trepanier, DNP, RN, CENP, the nurse residency program ushers in an era of increased strength and clinical aptitude at Premier Health.
“Not only is the health care arena increasingly competitive, it’s ever-evolving, with both technological and medical breakthroughs that have heightened the caliber of patient care,” Dr. Trepanier said. ”The Premier Health nurse residency program allows us to answer the call to provide advanced care, while enabling us to better fulfill our mission to build healthier communities. The nurse residency program is now a fundamental aspect of the practice and profession of nursing at Premier Health. As Southwest Ohio’s leading health care resource, we expect our nurses to practice at a corresponding skill level. It’s simply in the best interest of our patients.”
The residency also promotes socialization among nurses.
“It’s imperative that new nurses be welcomed by their cohorts and be comfortable in their new environments. Our curriculum will allow for greater ease into the nursing practice, and will also build a supportive structure among peer groups,” he said.
Evidence-based competencies are also known to accelerate graduate RN self-confidence; reduce turnover, and subsequently, cost; and positively impact both patient and physician satisfaction, as well as team collaboration and nurse engagement.
The receptions will provide new nurses with the opportunity to meet their peers, as well as the hospitals’ and Premier Health system’s administrative staffs. The residency program’s inaugural session is comprised of approximately 100 nurses.
