ENGLEWOOD – The past couple of months I’ve written about romance novels and action thrillers. I thought April might be a good time to review some new books for young adults. Young adult fiction is published for readers ranging from 12 to 20 years old. According to Wikipedia, the subject matter and story lines of this type of literature are usually consistent with the age and experience of the main characters and spans the spectrum of fiction genres. The stories focus on specific challenges of youth, which are sometimes referred to as problem novels or coming-of-age novels. Here are some of the best and brightest young adult authors who write for the younger crowd.
Victoria Aveyard: An American writer of young adult fantasy fiction, she is known for her novel, “Red Queen,” which is now being adapted into a movie. The Red Queen Series is a quartet of books, including two novellas, published by Harper Teens. In the “Red Queen,” the Reds are commoners ruled by a Silver Elite in possession of God-like powers. To a 17- year old girl, from a poverty stricken background, it seems like nothing can ever change. When working with people she hates, she discovers, despite her Red blood, a deadly power of her own. Also available in the series is “Glass Sword” (2016) and “King’s Cage,” released this past February. The fourth book in the series will be released in 2018 — I can’t wait! Here’s what USA Today had to say: “Red Queen is a sizzling, imaginative thriller, where romance and revolution collide, where power and justice duel. It’s exhilarating, compelling, action-packed and unputdownable.” Now, that’s some review!
Jennifer Armentrout: This author has a very good series about the Lux, an alien race who have been on Earth and dispersed around the world. Once they have completed why they were sent here they will send for the rest of their race. The Lux teens, who are already here and bonded with the earth teens, think they will merge without harming the human race. This is not the case. Now, this group of teens must make Earth a place of peace for the future of both races. The series kicked off with her novel, “Obsidian,” which has been optioned by Sierra pictures. Four books followed with the most recent, “Lux Opposition.” This is a very well written series of young adult fantasy adventure novels and even I loved it!
Mike Lupica: He is a newspaper columnist best known for his provocative commentary on sports for the New York Daily News and his appearance on ESPN TV. He also writes riveting young adult novels for those who just plain love their sports. Some of his previous novels include “Travel Team,” “The Big Field,” “Heat,” and “Summer Ball.” He covers a myriad of sports in his books so I’m sure you younger sports fans can find one you might like to read. Just check out his web site (Google Mike Lupica) and you can browse all of his books complete with a synopsis. He is at the top of his field when it comes to the tumultuous world of sports.
Jeff Spieles: I want to finish with Jeff Spieles, one of my favorite local authors. He really speaks to the young adult who loves mystery and history. His first book, “In Sherman’s Path,” is a wonderful story of how war and people’s actions can have life changing effects on a young man’s life. His most recent book, “Echoes of an Outlaw’s Curse,” is about a mother who dies unexpectedly and turns the world upside down for a young boy. His mother has not moved on and appears to him everywhere they shared memories. It’s a journey toward an unsettling truth about himself, and a young girl he befriends, that will turn into his worst nightmare. Jeff has told me he is currently working on a three book series — can’t wait to read them. Here’s what Midwest Book Reviews said about Jeff’s books: “Must-have for any middle grade or high school language arts or social studies classroom.”
For a young adult who is looking for a book to read, whether it’s fantasy fiction, history, mystery or sports, these authors will get their attention with their bestselling books. Happy reading, everyone!
