UNION — A water main replacement project for West Martindale Road totaling $233,795 was approved Monday by Union Council.
The city received a grant loan for the project.
A total of nine contractors bid on the project with Coate Construction LLC submitting the lowest bid to beat the next lowest bid by more than $35,700.
“We had nine or 10 bids form a low of $233,795 to a high of $351,194,” said City Manager John Applegate. “Coate has done work for us before in the community in a satisfactory manner and we recommend that council adopt this ordinance. We anticipate with the awarding of this contract that the work will start next week.”
An initial excavation into the road would be made in front of the church on West Martindale where a slight conflict between the new and old water line exists. The city plans to plug the water main 7,500 feet to the west. A new line will be offset to the current water line and will parallel the existing line up to Jodean and Draper.
Another supply line will be run to Union Elementary. The existing line comes in off of Hollycrest.
“Our thinking was that we could run the new line to the school in half a day or a day at the most, but I am always worried about Murphy’s Law coming into play and if something doesn’t go quite right we could have the school, the Bointnott and Hollycrest area without water,” Applegate said.
By running in another supply line the area will be serviced by two lines to boost fire hydrant pressure.
After that the project will move to the Martindale and Montgomery Street area going west. Applegate said he expects the project to be completed by August 1. All of the water and sewer and gas lines are being marked and once the project starts the road will be closed to through traffic at Martindale and Montgomery and at Jodean and Draper.
Motorists will be able to cross Martindale from side streets but intersections will be controlled by signs to direct traffic.
