UNION — At Monday’s meeting Union City Council voted to extend the city’s existing depository agreement with Fifth Third Bank.

“Our current agreement expires December 31 and it is staff’s recommendation to extend the agreement under the same conditions as the current agreement,” said City Manager John Applegate.

The agreement would be for an additional three years beginning Jan. 1, 2016 and ending on Dec. 31, 2018.

In addition, council voted to enter into a contract with the law office of the Montgomery County Public Defender to provide legal services for indigent persons charged with jailable offenses under the city’s local ordinances.

“This is the annual resolution with the county public defender for the service agreement for 2016,” Applegate said. “The agreement is the same one we approved last year. The law director reviewed this and it is our recommendation that council adopt the agreement.”

The city finished the final course of paving on Old Springfield Road and opened the road to traffic on Friday morning.

“We had to install a special mix of asphalt that is temperature related and that’s why we pushed to get that road paved and striped and Mother Nature worked with us to get that done,” Applegate said. “There are some things that we will be finishing up in the next two to four weeks but the project is basically done.”

The land adjacent to the roadway will be rough graded this year with final grading and seeding taking place this spring as it is too late in the year to plant grass seed.

Council member Robin Perkins announced that an exploratory committee has been formed to talk about how the city might commemorate its upcoming bicentennial next year.

“We are working with the Veterans of Foreign Wars and Historical Society to look at what possibilities there are,” Perkins said. “If anyone is interested in being part of this committee and looking at what we can do to commemorate the bicentennial please let us know. Ms. Tremain, Mr. Blackwell and myself are working on that.”

City council will meet again on Monday, November 23 at 7:30 to review and possibly adopt the fiscal year 2016 budget.
