DAYTON — On Sunday, September 20 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., Montgomery County Environmental Services will host its third annual Tire Buyback event. Residents can earn $2 for every scrap/used tire they bring, up to a maximum of 10 tires per vehicle.
The Tire Buyback will take place at Montgomery County Solid Waste District Transfer and Recycling Facility, 1001 Encrete Lane, Moraine.
Scrap tires can create health and safety hazards, pollute the environment, and become neighborhood eyesores if they are not properly stored or discarded.
“This will be the third year of our tire buyback event, and each year we have collected more tires than the last,” said Montgomery County Commission President Debbie Lieberman. “Last year alone, we collected 18,000 tires in just five hours. That’s nearly 213 tons of tire material that will no longer pollute our communities and our waterways, and will instead be reused and recycled.”
All tires collected at the event will be shredded and recycled, and then used to make playground mulch, landfill liner and other materials.
“Improving collaboration and coordination is a key component of the Board of County Commissioners Strategic Plan, and the Tire Buyback is a model for the work that can be done when multiple jurisdictions and stakeholders come together to solve a problem,” Dodge said.
This event is open to all Montgomery County residents, and identification will be required to confirm residency. Participants will be paid $2 per tire in cash, up to a maximum of 10 tires per vehicle. Only passenger vehicle tires will be accepted – no farm tires, tractor tires or oversized tires. (Please note that hauling more than 10 tires at a time without an appropriate state registration is a felony.)
The 2013 Montgomery County Tire Buyback has been recognized for its innovation and community impact with a Gold Excellence Award from the Solid Waste Association of North America (SWANA) and a 2014 Achievement Award from The National Association of Counties (NACo). Municipalities across the country have modeled their tier buyback programs after the Montgomery County, Ohio Tire Buyback Event.
In 2014, Montgomery County collected more than 18,000 tires, weighing 213 tons. Approximately 1,900 cars passed through the event. After the buyback, the Solid Waste District saw a 21 percent reduction in scrap tires processing receipts, and the City of Dayton saw a 58 percent reduction in monthly scrap tire collection costs.
Montgomery County Environmental Services provides solid waste, recycling, drinking water, and water reclamation services to the citizens of Montgomery County. The department also offers educational outreach to local schools, communities, and businesses that want to learn more about conservation and sustainability in the Miami Valley region.
