WEST CARROLLTON — In a game cut short by rain Monday the Northmont varsity fast-pitch softball team scored an 11-0 run-rule victory over West Carrollton in 4 innings.

Normally a game doesn’t count as completed unless 5 innings are played but if coaches from both teams agree, a game can be counted as complete after 4 innings if weather becomes a factor.

Cassy Lewis earned the victory on the mound pitching all 4 innings with 5 strikeouts, one walk and two hits.

Leading the offense were Sydney Weaver who went 3 for 3 with one run and three RBI. Erin Mangen went 1 for 1 with two walks, three runs and one RBI. Lewis went 1 for 1 with two runs and one RBI. Kyra Rottgen went 2 for 3 with a walk and scored twice. Sydney McGilton went 1 for 2 with a triple and scored one run. Elaine Prater went 1 for 1 with a double and Ryanne Stoffel went 1 for 2 with one RBI.

The Lady Bolts took a 3-0 lead in the top of the 1st inning on a walk by Erin Mangen, and singles by Rottgen, Lewis, Weaver, and Stoffel.

Northmont increased its lead to 7-0 in the top of the 2nd. Mangen reached on a fielding error and advanced to second. Rottgen laid down a bunt and Mangen scored when Lewis reached first on a dropped fly ball in center. Weaver singled to center to score Rottgen and Lewis. Marissa Bardonaro grounded out to short to score Weaver to boost the lead to seven runs.

The Lady Bolts tacked on two more runs in the top of the 3rd inning. McGilton led off with a triple to right center and scored on a bunt by Mangen who safely reached first. Mangen reached second on the throw to the plate when West Carrollton unsuccessfully tried to prevent McGilton from scoring. Lewis reached base on another fielding error as Mangen scored to make it a 9-0 game.

Northmont began to substitute players at that point and the bench also contributed to the scoring onslaught. Elaine Prater led off the 4th inning with a double to the base of the fence in left center and advanced to third on a passed ball. Prater scored when Bardonaro reached second on a dropped fly ball in right field to make it 11-0.

Lewis sealed the win by striking out two of three in the bottom of the fourth as the rain increased.

“This game gave us a chance to work on the more detailed part of the game, especially on offense,” said longtime Assistant Coach Tammy Rizzo-Sterner. “We changed a few things up and worked to score some runs one at a time. The girls are stroking the ball very nicely. Erin Mangen is hitting .615 right now and has been knocking it out of the park. She is coming off a good trip and everybody in the lineup is getting it together and getting their bats going. Defensively we have been pretty sharp. We’ve made some small mistakes here and there but we are beginning to click as a team and I think the future will hold good things in store.”

With the victory Northmont improved to 3-2 overall while West Carrollton dropped to 1-4.

The Lady Bolts are scheduled to host Beavercreek on Friday and then play a doubleheader Saturday at Bellbrook. Monday the team plays at Versailles and hosts Xenia on Tuesday.
