DAYTON — Do you have an undiagnosed heart condition? If so, you might not know. This was the case for former Northmont wrestler Kieran Popp, who passed away unexpectedly at the young age of 23 in September 2015. He and his family were not aware of his fatal condition.

“If I would have known my son had heart disease, it could have been properly treated and he would still be alive today,” said Jeanene Popp.

Each day 26 children experience sudden cardiac arrest with only a 5 percent survival rate. While sudden cardiac deaths in youth are rare, approximately 9,500 children and young adults will experience sudden cardiac arrest each year. The numbers for sudden cardiac arrest are higher in athletes from ages 17 to 24.

In order to cut these numbers in half KAP for the Heart is hosting its inaugural event Spring for the Heart on Friday, April 28 from 6 p.m. until midnight at Marian Manor, 6050 Dog Leg Rd. Tickets can be purchased in advance at Photo Sports Center, 300 W. National Rd., Englewood or at The Hairless Hare Brewery, 738 W. National Rd., Vandalia, or tickets can be purchased online at: http://kapfortheheart.weebly.com at the door the night of the event.

Spring for the Heart will be an amazing night of great food, music, games, and silent auction. Proceeds from the event will benefit the Kieran Popp Memorial Scholarship and the American Heart Association.

KAP FOR THE HEART is a charitable organization created in loving memory Kieran in order to heighten awareness about the importance of heart health in youth and young adults while promoting a proactive approach to heart conditions for young adults. We will begin our mission by establishing a memorial scholarship to raise awareness about undiagnosed/underdiagnosed heart conditions in young adults. Through the scholarship we strive to reach young adults entering post- secondary education. The long term goal of the foundation is to provide assistance to cardiac patients who are in need of support for daily tasks and/or financial assistance for medications and proper treatment.
