Winter Guard places 2nd at state

The Northmont Winter Guard celebrates its 2nd place finish at the state championship backstage at Wright State’s Ervin J. Nutter Center.

FAIRBORN — The Northmont High School Winter Guard competed in the State Championships for the Mideast Performance Association on April 1 at the Wright State University Nutter Center.

Securing their season high score they were awarded the 2nd place Silver Medal in Scholastic A competition. The championships saw guards compete from around the Miami Valley and Greater Columbus area.

The high school guard has completed a comeback over past couple of years as they were in last place in 2015. The show entitled ‘What a Wonderful World’ secured a solid win over such schools as Carroll, Springboro, Lakota East, Franklin and others. The Northmont Winter Guard score was within four points of top scoring Kettering Fairmont.

This year’s team includes seniors Michael Philpot, Sharlee Twarek, Megan McKarns, Brooke Fugate. Juniors include Kaitlyn Cross, Morgan Roberts, Robin Nelson, Alexis Shepherd, Cassidy Smith, Briennon Saddler. Sophomores are Amanda Dimatteo-Blair and Kaitlyn Clutter. The team also includes Freshmen Skye Gerhart, Sara Dodson, Te’aylis Jackson, Riley Zaleski.

The team is directed by Jimi Burciaga and assisted by Jenny Hey and Gina Roberts.
