ENGLEWOOD — The Northmont Rotary recently heard from Joe Johnston about an innovative program at Englewood Elementary School.

Johnston, principal at Englewood Elementary, initiated Man Club, a group that was started to provide students with a positive role model and with positive experiences for the students that may not have that at home. They focus on attributes that a man should have/know, such as how to tie a tie, writing thank you notes, treating women with respect, etc. Field trips are an integral part of the education.

Trips are scheduled (or have occurred) to the police station, to a nursing home, and to the park where they will teach the boys how to fish. Other life skills include how to grill meat, how to make a good first impression and managing money/setting goals.

Johnston hopes that this will grow into a 2 year rotating program. In addition, he welcomes support from other adult men that would like to be involved in mentoring as well as donations of fishing poles, ties, or any other resources.

The Northmont Rotary Club meets at noon each Tuesday at Good Samaritan North Health Center, 9000 N. Main St., Englewood.
