ENGLEWOOD — These turkeys don’t know what’s ahead for them. Louis and Elmer (Bud) Bergman operated a turkey farm on West National Road, which was later sold for the construction of a Kmart store and the Country Square Shopping Center.
One of the young women is identified as Elenore Bergman. Elmer’s widow Caroline told the Randolph Township Historical Society in 2011 that the turkeys would get out and investigate funerals at Fairview Cemetery, standing around the open grave and gobbling.
Despite all the work at holidays—her job was picking the pinfeathers off the carcasses—she said she always liked turkey dinners.
During the winter, the RTHS will meet at 1 p.m. on the second Wednesday of every month at the History Center, 114 Valleyview Dr., Englewood. Call 836-6314 or 836-6751 for more information.
