DAYTON — The City of Dayton and the City of Union worked out a tentative agreement regarding annexations of Butler Township land Tuesday just before the start of the meeting of the Montgomery County Commissioners.

“We just agreed to work together and help the airport to continue to be able to stand and protect its circle of operations,” said Union City Manager John Applegate. “We reached a mutual understanding of how to get that accomplished and to work together and move forward.”

Essentially the two cities have agreed on a boundary which would keep Union from coming south of Route 40. Dayton withdrew its petitions, except for the original 150 acres along with two parcels north of the airport on Peters Pike (9.719 acres and 6.88 acres). Those petitions were all granted. Union’s petitions were also granted with the understanding that there would be boundary adjustments for the property along Route 40 that would allow Dayton to take over that property.

The boundary adjustments would allow for a planned runway extension and future growth to protect the operation of the airport, according to Applegate.

The agreement delineates a clear boundary for the airport across the middle of the 409.972 acres, up Dog Leg Road, around the 150 acre section south of Old Springfield Road and east of Peters Pike. Union would still get the northern portion of the 409.9 acre section that connects up to Jackson Road.

“Things are going to be different, but it’s a good thing,” Applegate said. “This solves a lot of problems.”
